Conquer the Transylvanian Alps! Făgăraș Ridge – 5 days Backpacking in the Romanian Mountains

Făgăraș Mountains, also known as the Transylvanian Alps, are the biggest and most impressive mountain range in the whole Carpathian Mountains. Home to the highest peaks in Romania, they are an oasis of steep ridges, glacial lakes, wilderness and raw beauty.
Hiking the entire ridge of the Făgăraș Mountains is the most challenging and beautiful route you can do in the Carpathian Mountains.
The alpine section of the ridge is constantly above 2000m altitude.
The 5-day hike that we propose to you, will give you the chance to cover this alpine section and camp in beautiful, secluded places. We will start the hike in Transylvania and end in the same region. There are two open periods for registrations in 2026: July 21-25 and August 14-18.
📅 PROGRAMME
🟢 Day 1
Starting as early as possible, we will begin the hike from the village of Sebeșu.
The aim of today’s hike is to get to ridge and hike the first part of it until we reach the Scara mountain refuge (shelter) where we will spend the night.
🚶♂️ Distance approx. 20km 〽️ Elevation +1800m
🟢 Day 2
This hiking day will take our steps on Custura Sărății, one of the best hiking sections of the ridge and onward to Negoiu Peak (2535m), the second highest peak in Romania, which is sometimes called ”The Everest” of Romania, due to its shape.
We will spend the night and camp around Călțun mountain refuge (shelter), close to Călțun glacial lake.

🟢 Day 3
This is the day when we reach several high peaks on the main ridge and also cross on top of the tunnel of the famous Transfăgărășan Road. The Transfăgărășan Road is ”one of the most spectacular mountain roads in the whole world” as the folks from Top Gear described it.
We will camp and sleep around Fereastra Zmeilor mountain refuge (shelter).

🟢 Day 4
On this hiking day we will cross other several peaks, saddles and narrow ridges on our way to the ”roof” of Romania, Moldoveanu Peak (2545m). Close to it, Viștea Mare Peak (2527m) the third highest peak in Romania, forms the famous ”trapezium” shape visible from many other massifs in the country.
We will spend the night and camp around Viștea Mare mountain refuge (shelter).
🚶♂️ Distance approx. 10 km 〽️ elevation +1000 m, -600 m
🟢 Day 5
On the last day of our adventure, we’ll cross the last alpine section of the Făgăraș Mountain ridge all the way to Dara and Hârtopu Darei, the last two peaks above 2500m. Afterwards, we will start descending from the main ridge to the village of Breaza, where the hike ends.

- Tent (you can share the weight with another person or not), sleeping bag (comfort index approx. 5 degrees), mattress/ inflatable mattress/ isoprene – if you are missing something, you can rent from us or we can put you in touch with our partners who have camping equipment for rent
- hiking boots/ hiking shoes
- long trekking trousers
- T-shirts/blouses
- fleece and down jacket
- waterproof and wind-stopper jacket
- hat/cap
- sunglasses, sunscreen
- backpack (around 45 L) + rain cover
- trekking poles
- head-torch with charged batteries
- personal hygiene kit, mini medical kit (we will also have a group kit, but take the products you need regularly)
- food / dry food for 5 days (there is the option with hot meals from the mountain huts on the way according to the group plan) + cooking accessories
- rubbish bags
- optional: binoculars, insect repellent, water bottles (we refill them at the springs), ear-plugs (for a deeper sleep)
We can offer private transfers on day 1 & 5 from and to Brașov. We will make the arrangements together according to the group requirements for the period in question.
450 EUR/ person for a group of maximum 7 hikers
- The tax includes:
- 5 days of guiding with certified mountain guide
- photo & video album of the event
- private transfer from and to Brașov on day 1 & 5 upon request
- The tax does NOT include:
- food for 5 days and other personal expenses
- entrance / tickets for different touristic sites
- other services / transfers unless requested and discussed before the trip

Private tour: this tour is for small groups of hikers and will be organized at 2 different periods in 2026 July 21-25 and August 14-18.
Limited places to keep a fair guide – customer ratio and to provide as personal and enjoyable an experience as possible for each participant.
